It started with a trip to Nepal in 1998.

In 1998, a journey to Nepal changed everything. What began as travel became an awakening — a first-hand encounter with the vulnerability of women and children in communities where poverty, isolation, and lack of opportunity create the perfect conditions for exploitation.

That trip planted a seed. Five years later, in 2003, the work continued in Bangladesh — deeper and more deliberate. I spent time supporting Fair Trade organisations, purchasing handmade, artisan-made products directly from women who were building an income and a future for themselves, often in the face of poverty and gender inequality that kept them without power or choice. It was a small act — buying a handwoven basket, a piece of textile — but it was also a statement: that these women's work, and their dignity, mattered.

In the years that followed, that same seed took me further — into China, Laos, across parts of Africa, and Papua New Guinea. Each place was different, but the pattern was heartbreakingly familiar: women trapped in circumstances they had no power to change, isolated by poverty, geography, or culture, and made vulnerable to the men and systems that would exploit them. I met women who had nothing left to bargain with — no money, no education, no way out — and I saw, up close, how easily that kind of helplessness becomes the door through which trafficking walks in. These weren't statistics to me. They were faces, names, and moments I have never forgotten.

What became clear, working alongside NGOs and not-for-profits in some of the world's most challenging environments, was this: the people doing the most important work in the world are often the least resourced, the least supported, and the most burned out.
